You’re a budding musician trying to make your mark on the world and get signed to a record label.  You’ve got the talent you just need some exposure and attract the attention of a record label.  How do you go about getting signed to a record label?  Let us show you the steps you need to take to get yourself signed.

Talent

It goes without saying that if you want to land a record deal you need some raw talent.  Record labels and studios spend big money putting together recording studios, distribution channels, marketing teams and supply chains.  They want a return on the investment that they have made and they recoup that investment by selling records.

No matter how talented you are or how big your fan base is you’re going to need a studio coach.  This is someone who understands the difference between a recording and a live performance.  You need the recording to sound the best it can be since an executive is only going to listen to a few seconds.  Bear in mind as well that executives at a record label get flooded with demo tapes from people just like you wanting a record deal.  Your music needs to stand out this brings us to the next point the demo.

Demo Tape

Once you have worked with a studio coached now it is time to make your demo tape.  There are recording technologies that allow pretty much anyone to make a great recording right in your own home.  Get yourself a decent microphone and the right recording software.  If you don’t have the knowhow to do the recording yourself there are still recording studios that can help you.  Start with one song and make it the best you can then go from there.

Promote Yourself

In these day and age if you want to make it in the music industry is to promote yourself across the various social media channels.  We’re not talking about Twitter and Facebook, although they will help but you need to be on the social platforms designed for music.  You’re going to need to put together your own website and you can embed audio and video files of your music.  You want to have a decent presence on YouTube, SoundCloud and Reverbnation.  It can help you build a fan following and attract the attention of labels.  Remember Justin Beiber get signed because of his YouTube videos.
